Located between two of Ontario’s most rapidly expanding cities in Hamilton and Burlington, the burgeoning community of Waterdown has recently begun to follow suit.

Just a short jaunt away from the western corner of Lake Ontario, Waterdown has seen some major developments over the recent past. And, even more recently, Waterdown has become home to a large number of families and young couples looking to escape overcrowded and overpriced city centres in search of some small-town solace.

One of the most important aspects when it comes to finding a community to raise a family in, however, is the quality and proximity of schools, which is one category the community of Waterdown doesn’t fall short in.

Guardian Angels Catholic Elementary School

Located at 705 Centre Road beside the Saint Thomas the Apostle Catholic Church, Guardian Angels Catholic Elementary School is a very well-regarded Catholic elementary school in the northern end of Waterdown.

Founded in 2001, this Waterdown school provides a faith-based education to students in the Waterdown area from Junior Kindergarten through to Grade 8. Known for their above-average academic performance along with a wide selection of sports teams, a gold-winning robotics club, and several other extracurricular activities, Guardian Angels provides a very well-rounded school experience to their students.

According to the trusted and highly-acclaimed Fraser Institute School Rankings performance indicator, which ranks schools across North America based on relative local academic performance, Guardian Angels Catholic Elementary School scored an impressive 8.1 out of 10.

Allan A. Greenleaf Elementary School

Just south of Guardian Angels and further toward the Waterdown core is Allan A. Greenleaf Elementary School, located at 211 Parkside Drive.

With an average annual enrollment of about 620 students from Kindergarten to Grade 8, Allan A. Greenleaf is supported by a comprehensive list of full-time staff and Educational Assistants. This popular Waterdown school places a strong focus on increasing the academic potential of its students and, in particular, has committed to increasing the reading comprehension levels of their Senior Kindergarten students.

According to the Fraser Institute’s school rankings, Allan A. Greenleaf Elementary School scores an above-average 6.2 out of 10.

Saint Thomas the Apostle Catholic Elementary School

Situated in Waterdown’s southeastern end, Saint Thomas the Apostle Catholic Elementary School can be found at 170 Skinner Road just south of Dundas Street East.

Welcoming students from Junior Kindergarten to Grade 8, St. Thomas Catholic School is a fantastic alternative to Guardian Angels, another one of Waterdown’s Catholic faith-based educational institutions. Similarly, St. Thomas the Apostle fosters a positive and nurturing environment based around religious worship while also providing a standardized Catholic District School Board curriculum.

The Fraser Institute ranks this Waterdown school with a notable 7.2 out of 10.

Guy B. Brown Elementary Public School

Found right in the middle of central Waterdown at 55 Braeheid Avenue, Guy B. Brown Elementary Public School is one of the most easily accessible elementary schools within the Waterdown area.

Unlike many Waterdown schools, children between the academic age range of Grade 1 up to Grade 8 who are seeking French Immersion education are supported by Guy B. Brown’s curriculum.

Despite their advanced language skills, however, the Fraser Institute only ranks Guy B. Brown at a 5.8 out of 10.

Waterdown District High School

Located at 215 Parkside Drive, right next door to Allan A. Greenleaf Elementary School, Waterdown District High School is the natural next step for many when it comes to secondary education in the Waterdown area.

With an average annual attendance of about 1,300 students between Grade 9 and Grade 12, this Waterdown school is a very popular choice among high school-aged students in the community. And, with a vast collection of various teams and clubs, it’s easy to see why.

When it comes to the Fraser Institute’s rankings, Waterdown District High School scores just above average at a 6.3 out of 10.
